Kidney Failure in and near Florida

Kidney Failure

Kidney failure results when the function has decreased due to medical conditions and urine is not able to be filtered and removed properly

Cause

Causes of kidney failure can be due to poorly managed high blood pressure, diabetes, inflammation and infecgtion of the kidneys.  Also chronic blockage by kidney stones and kidney cancer are possible causes.

Symptoms

Symptoms of kidney failure are due to the build-up of waste products in the body and may cause weakness, shortness of breath, lethargy, and confusion.  Abnormal amounts of potassium may accumulate and can lead to abnormal heart rhythms.

Detection

The diagnosis of kidney failure usually is made by blood tests measuring waste products in the blood BUN, creatinine.  Urine tests can detect large amounts of protein, abnormal cells and electrolytes.  Ultrasound can show that the kidneys have decreased in size.

Treatment

Treatment consists of controlling blood pressure, diabetes or whatever medical condition leading to kidney failure.  Hemodialysis, kidney transplant are other ways to treat this condition.  Medications such as phosphorus lowering medications and iron supplements are important.  Patients with renal failure often develop anemia.

Prevention

Eating a healthy diet low in protein and monitoring medical diseases are crucial in prevention of kidney failure.
